Remember 4Real? The unusual baby name was not allowed to be given to a baby boy earlier this year in New Zealand. But somehow Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii slipped by them.

Judge Rob Murfitt agreed with a nine-year-old girl that her unusual name was a form of parental cruelty, and allowed her to become a temporary ward of the court so she could change it.

Wrote Murfitt in his ruling, "The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child’s parents have shown in choosing this name. It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."

The registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in New Zealand, Brian Clarke, told reporters that baby names must not cause offense to a "reasonable person."

The judge said he was tired of parents giving their children such odd and embarrassing names, to be unique or draw attention to themselves, or for whatever other reasons parents choose to do so.

Murfitt listed a few other names that had been refused: Sex Fruit, Fish and Chips (for twins), Keenan got Lucy, Yeah Detroit, and the aforementioned 4Real.

However, the following names were actually legally bestowed upon the forever unfortunate offspring: Violence, Midnight Chardonnay, and my personal favorite, Number 16 Bus Shelter.

Celebrities are well, famous, for choosing the peculiar when naming their "sex fruit." Soleil Moon Frye, the former child star from "Punky Brewster," didn’t seem too traumatized by her strange name, though. She in turn named her two daughters Poet Sienna Rose and Jagger Joseph Blu (yes, that’s a girl).

In fact, odd baby names are nothing new, and the celebrity trend to choose truly outlandish monikers is only continuing. Fifi Trixibelle, Inspektor Pilot, Audio Science, and Moxie Crimefighter (the respectively unlucky children of Bob Geldof, Jason Lee, Shannyn Sossamon, and Penn Jillette) make Gwyneth Paltrow’s much-mocked daughter Apple seem like "Mary" in comparison.

But goofy baby names are not unique to the famous. Articles citing bizarre baby names tend to elicit much reader response, usually from those similarly unfortunately named in the general population. There’s the chorus of sad folks carrying around names like Ivan Odor, Peaches and Cream (twins), and a whole bunch of people with names like Harry Cox, Peter Rabbitt, and Mary Christmas. There was even one woman who said her name was Bananarama.

Well-meaning baby naming sites suggest that parents-to-be give their chosen name the playground test (picture hollering the name across a crowded playground), the Supreme Court judge test (could Justice Caramel Candy be taken seriously?), or something similar.

Well sure, that works: "Hey, Number 16 Bus Shelter, get your butt over here, it’s time for your therapy session!"

Secular ceremony, the latest trend in UK, focuses on the practice of relevant faith with personal care to the child. Here we find no prayer or blessing as these concepts are considered to be orthodox.

The first thing to be done is register the birth of your child and mention the time, date, sex, place and baby’s name supported by the details of parents. Registration process should be initiated within 42 days at the registry office situated in your area or where the baby was born.

Try to change the spelling of a name by changing/adding/subtracting 1 or 2 letters at the most like Michael to Michal or Ruben to Reuben! You may also want to use historical or Biblical names for your child. There are a lot of names you can choose from if you elect to go this route. Examples are David, Samuel, Daniel, Gabriel or Timothy.

Learn how the ancient Chinese name their newborns….

It is not uncommon for a Chinese couple to seek the services of an astrologer to find a suitable Chinese baby name for their new born child. It is believe that a suitable Chinese baby name can improve the luck of the child and give the child a more auspicious life path.

The methodologies for selecting a suitable Chinese baby vary between the different schools of thoughts but most of them are based on the principles of Yin and Yang as well as the Five Elements.

Chinese characters are made up of strokes. The odd number strokes are Yang while the even number strokes are Yin. For example a character composed on two strokes is Yin while another character composed on 3 or 5 stokes are Yang. The total number of strokes used in the name matters. Depending on the school, a certain range of strokes are auspicious while certain other ranges are not.

In most schools the date of time of the baby’s birth is also required to compute the Ba Zi or Eight Characters. From the eight characters, the astrologer can determine the useful element. This is usually but not necessary the element is that most lacking in the chart.

Let say that the element that is most lacking in the chart is water. In this case the astrologer will find a name that is associated with water. Obvious names would include water or ocean. Less obvious is winter which is also associated with water. For someone lacking in the wood element, suitable names include wood, forest, spring (a season of wood) or a name of a plant.

Another technique is to find a Chinese name that comes with the required element. Most Chinese characters are composed of basic characters. For example the character for the word ’stove’ a made up of the character fire and earth. Therefore if you lack fire or earth you can call yourself stove! Not the best of example but I hope you understand the principle!

These are by no means the only methods. Let me give you an example. In the old days, where infant mortality rate is quite high, parent resort to giving their child very lowly names like Cow or Pig hoping the evil spirits will miss them hence allowing them to live to a ripe old age!

Now you now why someone not so good looking is called ‘Spring Beauty‘ while an obvious beauty is called a ‘Pig’!

4. Get the spelling right. Be careful about using an unusual baby name that is simply a popular name cached in a new spelling-such as ‘Jaysonne’ or ‘Jayesun.’ This will of course sound phony, considering that the pronunciation will remain plain old ‘Jason.’ More importantly, your child may even have to face ridicule from others on this account.

5. Avoid strange combinations. Also, resist the temptation to create an unusual baby name by stringing together two or more names, such as ‘Branjelina’. Unless done sensibly, such a name will probably sound outlandish or gawky.
